The Benefits of Chess

Dependent on who is asked, the benefits of chess can vary greatly. For a child, it may be the spirit of competition. A coach may suggest the life skills developed from the chessboard are the end goal to become a better person. For a parent, their child's new friendships in their after school chess program is the most critical purpose to invest. If we ask the child's teacher, they may say the inquisitive answers their chess-playing students give demonstrates the impact of chess education. These answers are wonderful, purposeful, and research-backed to help decide whether to invest in chess for your child's life.

Though it can be hard to determine causation in research, there is a plethora of literature from notable chess players and enthusiasts passionate about the game, psychology, and human development that are in search of the Holy Grail of chess. The Journal of Chess Research, was built in 2014, to begin collecting chess studies to educate academic institutions and the public better.
